New PJs

December30, 2005

I’m sure you all want to know about what I wear to sleep at night, but I’m going to tell you anyway. I’m thrilled with my new pajamas. Adam’s parents are so smart to ask what I want for Christmas, and I appreicate their kindness very much. This year, one of the things I asked for was new silky pj’s from Victoria’s Secret. C’mon, I know what you’re thinking…yes, I asked my husband’s mother to buy me pajamas. I wouldn’t technically consider them to be lingerie, even though they DID come from VS–they are long-sleeved and long pants, and they are not see-through in any way.
With those details out of the way, here’s a picture. They’re so feely, and actually surprisingly warm. Mine are not this red color, but they’re “ballet pink.” Very fun, so I just had to share.

Pretty Bathroom

November8, 2005

Tonight was the fun part! We installed a bunch of stuff that we’d been working on in the bathroom, and it’s mostly done. Still a few odds and ends to tie up, but it’s beginning to look really good! I’m thrilled because it feels like it has taken quite a while, and I’m, honestly, ready to move along to another project. (Like maybe getting ready for Christmas, or Anne Page’s birthday.)
Lots of Toile
You can’t tell from this next picture, but the toilet is new and so is the medicine cabinet. The cabinet has a cool paint job that took quite a few coats of paint–black with red peaking out from underneath. It looks cool, and even Adam, who hasn’t been thrilled with the results of some of my other painting experiments, likes it.
New toilet and medicine cabinet
The floor is wood, painted a dark red, and all the fixtures have the oil-rubbed bronze look.
Anyway we’re still waiting on the light for above the sink. Oh, and about that sink, we got the call from the auto-bot man from Lowes about 2 weeks after we placed our order saying that our order was ready to be picked up. I was totally amazed–so amazed that I made the auto-bot man repeat the message. I also did it because I liked hearing his funny voice. I never reported our good fortune after griping about it on here, so I just wanted to clear the record. Lowes actually exceeded my expectations, for once.
I just wanted to mention that Lynchburg is moving further into the 21st century…we’re getting a Panera Bread and a Home Depot. And, in answer to the inevitable questions, no, we don’t have either of these in Lynchburg yet, sigh, sigh. There’s a whole list of fine establishments that I would be interested in having in the ‘burg, but, alas, nobody has asked me.
So anyway, if you’ve been thinking about visiting the ‘burg, Hotel Webb is now back in business. Come visit!

It’s the beginning

Current Condition of Powder Room
It’s the beginning of many, many trips to Lowes as we start remodeling our downstairs bathroom, fondly known as the powder room. The goal of this whole remodel is to make it actually look like a powder room, somewhere you’d like to go to check your hair at a party, or to wipe your child’s rear end…either way. Anyway, it needs to look nice.
In case you’re wondering why the wiping was inserted into the story line above, it just happens to be on my mind. Our trip to Lowes this evening was a royal mess, in many senses of the phrase. Adam thought we were just going for a quick 20 minute trip to return the pedestal sink that didn’t work with the plumbing in our house. (Okay, it would work after many hours of plumbing work, but we’re not up for that at this point. We may change our minds after finding out that our second choice is back ordered until DECEMBER!)
I knew that there were about 10 things that I wanted to check out, all bathroom related, and I have literally been trying to make it to Lowes all day today…with no luck until this evening. So I dragged the entire family to Lowes with me so that Adam could see the vanity selection. Bad move on my part! Within the the first 10 minutes of being at Lowes we see Small Bean digging in the back of her pants. Curious, we ask what’s going on, and the reply is, “I’m trying to see if I have BM in my pants.” Very matter of fact, just like that. This is from a child that has been potty-trained for a while now, so it seemed a little odd. Anyway, I got elected, in what could never, ever be construed as anything less than a democratic process, to accompany said child to the restroom where the contents of said pants were, in fact, BM.
I’ll spare you more details, but that was just the beginning of a crazy trip to Lowes tonight. We did get a light for above the shower, and a medicine cabinet to go above the toilet. Some progress, at least, has been made, but there are miles to go before we ….. never mind, nothing that rhymes here is good. We’ll just leave it at that.

Home Again, Home Again

September13, 2005

We spent the weekend frolicking in DC at Anthony’s wedding. It was a total blast! We saw the monuments; biked around them for 4 hours, actually. We actually went out to a bar at night, amazing! We went to the rehearsal dinner high atop a hotel overlooking the Pentagon and stayed out late enough to see the lights on the monuments. Read: we stayed out after 8pm. Did you know that the Washington Monument has 2 red lights at the top that come on at dark that make it look like it has eyes? We danced the night away at the reception to “Starry-Eyed Surprise,” the theme song of the wedding. You’ve probably gathered an important fact from these details…we left the girls at home!!! It was fabulous to get to be foot-loose and fancy-free for a weekend–I actually felt guilty about how much fun it was.
While we were gone, Peapod learned lots of new tricks: 1. How to crawl on all fours instead of doing the army crawl, 2. how to wave w/ both hands at the same time, 3. how to say “ni ni,” as in “Night, Night,” and 4. For once, after 2 or 3 months of repetition, she might have finally learned to sign “All Done” when she’s finished eating.
Those of you who know me know that I’m not totally sold on the whole recent fad of teaching 6 month olds how to do simple sign-language. There is certainly nothing morally wrong with it, I just never thought that I’d want to join the fad. However, this is another instance in which you end up doing things as a parent that you never thought you’d do.
As a result of Peapod’s incessant screaming at meal times, her continued lack of communication skills (very few 9 month olds can tell you exactly what they want you to do for them), and my intense aversion to being screamed at, we decided to try to teach her to tell us that she was done eating. Maybe it has finally paid off because, last night at supper, I gave her a bite at the end of the meal, and she immediately threw her hands up in the air and waved them around, which was the signal. Of couse we made a huge deal out of it and got her out right away, hoping that it would sink in. Has she done it again since? Nope….wishful thinking. Too bad for us. We’ll have to keep trying.
Yes, it’s amazing how much more darling and cute my children seem when I’ve been away from them for a while. The weather here has been truly beautiful for a week or two now. Highs around 80, lows in the upper 50s, and low humidity. So we were driving around today, and out of the blue Small Bean says, “Mama, there’s a car without a top.” It was a convertible. Not that this revelation will be nearly as cute to anybody else besides me, but it was precious at the time. This will be the end of this part of the post, which has definitely gone from chronicling our awesome weekend to raving about our children. It might get even more sappy if I don’t change topics.
It was fun to get to hang around all of Anthony and Bethany’s friends. They are just normal people like we are, but I was struck with how unpretentious they were. They weren’t out to impress anybody; they really didn’t seem to care too much what other people thought about them or their lives. Not that they thumbed their noses at society’s norms or anything like that, it just seemed that they were “comfortable in their skin,” and if someone didn’t like the way they were, that was okay with them. There was definitely something intriguing about them. Maybe it was because they live in a big city, and the pressures of small town life are not present there. Some of them were concerned with things like poverty in Africa (something that people in Lynchburg don’t talk about in a social setting generally), and considering moving to a really poor part of town just to minster to people around them. It was definitely interesting to hear the things that they talked about and to contrast them to the things that I talk about…..

Walking

August23, 2005

So we’ve taken up walking after supper for some exercise. Actually we’ve walked twice, which is more than once, so we’re working on a trend. Adam has said that he’s going to run after a warm-up walk with the rest of us, which he actually has done.
Oh, oh, there went the 10pm alarm. See we really are trying to be more structured around here instead of so fly-by-the-seat-of-our-pants like we normally are. The 1opm alarm means that it’s time to go up to bed. It’s supposed to make us get in bed sooner, and sometimes it actually works–sometimes not. Sometimes we just ignore it like I’m doing right now.
Anyway, back to the walking. Tonight we walked to the ATM on Boonsboro, passed “Gwanddaddy” riding his bike, and then went to Kroger (2nd time today) for baby wipes. Don’t want to be without wipes, even though we know we could have made do.
That was our excitement for tonight. The 10pm alarm calls.
